Please note that in almost all cases, your date of membership in the retire- ment system is determined by your application for membership which may not necessarily be the date of employment.
All administrative and custodial staff employees are eligible to join the New York City Employees' Retirement System. You may join the system immediately. You are required to join within six months of your date of appointment to Civil Service. Until you join the Retirement System, Social Security is not deducted.
When you file your application, deductions from your salary checks will be made effective as of the date of your certificate issued by the New York City Employees' Retirement System.
