This is a program of legal services for workers represented by District Council 37 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and its retirees.
MELS lawyers are licensed to practice law in the State of New York, or in the State of Florida. They work full time for the plan, and are not permitted to have an outside law practice. You and your covered dependents are eligible for MELS if District Council 37 represents you in your job.
The Municipal Employees Legal Service (MELS) provides legal information and services such as Landlord- Tenant relations and rights, house closings, family matters (divorce proceedings and custody hearings), bankruptcy and problems with administrative agencies (SSI or Food Stamps). There is a Consumer's Unit handling referrals concerning products and services.
